UTM parameters
UTM parameters are URL tags (utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, utm_content, utm_term) that identify where a visit came from, feeding analytics tools’ channel and campaign reporting.
— In practice
UTMs are the humble infrastructure that determines whether analytics can say anything useful about paid traffic. The failure mode is inconsistency: "facebook", "Facebook", and "fb" become three channels, and reporting fragments into noise.
The fix is a written convention (lowercase, fixed vocabularies, templated per platform) enforced by tracking templates and auto-tagging where available — set once, audited quarterly.
